Marudhamalai Temple:

This hill top temple is situated 12 kms away from the Central city. It is dedicated to Lord Muruga. This is a very famous temple. It is behaved that Lord Dandayuthapani performed several miracles in this hill top temple.
Perur Temple:

This is one of the ancient temple. It is located 7 kms away from the city and is said to be built by Karikala Cholan before 1500 years. The temple is dedicated to Lord Patteeswarar and his better half Pachainayaki. Devotees gather during the festive occasions. The Kanagasabai hall has some exciting sculptures.The other temples are Karamadai Ranganathar Temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a second oldest temple in Coimbatore built by the Vijayanagara Kings.
Velliyangiri andavar Temple:

This temple is located on the way to Siruvani. This beautiful temple is built and stands on one of the five hills. The five hills represent the five faces of Lord Shiva. Only in this temple the devotees are allowed to see the Panchalingam.
Eachanari Vinayakar Temple:

This temple lays 13 Km away from coimbatore on the pollachi main road. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vinayaka or Ganesha.
Masaniyamman Kovil:

This temple is located between pollachi and palakkad, in kerala. This temple is about 50 Km from coimbatore. People who come to this holy temple have a belief that people who grind red chilly paste and apply it on the statue of god inside the temple, their belongings which they lost would be regained by them. This temple is located in Anamalai.
Kongunattu Thirupathi:

Coimbatore and its surrounding places are known as Kongu Nadu. The Naina hill, which is located in Kongu Nadu, is unique holy land. This place is proudly named as Kongu-Thirupathi. Pilgrims visit here, every Saturday. The pilgrims chorus “Govinda” and climb up the hill to find the deity.
Thyanalingam:

This is located in the Isha Yoga Centre, Velliyangiri Falls in coimbatore. Due to the efforts of Yogi Sathguru Jagi Vasudevand some other yogi’s, the Thyanalingam has come to power. Even people, who have not experienced this before, really get experienced due to this Thiyanalingam. When we lead a life with its entire dimension, no greed, no fear and no hatred, it is of great joy and this Thynalingam provides that.

Air:

The city has an airport (Coimbatore Airport) at Peelamedu (11 km from the city) and an air-force base at Sulur (15 km). The Coimbatore airport caters to domestic flights to all the major Indian cities and international flights to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Muscat, Sharjah and Colombo. The Extended Runway is now ready at Coimbatore airport. It now runs to 9,760 feet (2,970 m) and is capable of handling wide-bodied and “fat-bellied” aircraft, such as are used for international flights. With the extended runway, airlines can operate aircraft types such as 747 SP, A 330, 747-300B, 747-300 ER, 747-400 and 747-200.

Rail:

Trains first began serving Coimbatore in 1872, upon construction of the Podanur (Coimbatore South) -Madras line connecting Kerala and the west coast with the rest of India. Broad gauge trains connect Coimbatore to all parts of India and Tamil Nadu. Meter gauge line existed between Podanur and Dindigul got closed on May 2009 and is under gauge conversion. The Coimbatore Junction is well connected to major Indian cities like Chennai, Bangalore, New Delhi and Mumbai, besides the neighbouring State of Kerala. It is second highest revenue yielding station in the Southern Railway division of Indian Railways.

Coimbatore Airport is an accomplished airport of the city of Coimbatore and is located in the Peelamedu region of the city. In the earlier years it was known as the Peelamedu or Coimbatore Civil Aerodrome and is at a distance of 13 Miles (21 kilometers) from the city center. The airport had its commencement in the 1940’s in the form of a civil aerodrome with just a few airplanes of the Indian Airlines. From that period for a considerable phase the air services were restricted to the cities of Chennai and Mumbai. However, in the later years services to Cochin and Bangalore were also added. The airport in the 80s had a thorough transformation when it was closed down for runway expansion so as to enable modern days jets like Boeing 737 and Airbus to operate. The year 1987 is a landmark in the history of this airport since on that year the project of runway exansion was completed and a new terminal started operation.

HISTORY
Originally Coimbatore district formed part of the Kongu country, the history of which dates back to the Sangam age. It is found that in early days the area was inhabited by tribes, the most predominant among them being the Kosars who are reported to have had their headquarters at Kosampathur which probably later became the present Coimbatore. However, tribal predominance did not last long as they were over-run by the Rashtra Kutas. From Rashtrakutas the region fell into the hands of the Cholas who were in prominence at the time of Raja Raja Chola. On the decline of Cholas the Kongu territory was occupied by the Chalukyas and then by the Pandyas and the cysalas. Due to internal strife in the Pandyan kingdom the Muslim rulers from Delhi happened to interfere. Thus the area fell into the hands of Madurai Sultanate from whom the Vijayanagar rulers wrestled for the region during 1377-78 after overthrowing the Madurai Sultanate. For a few years the area remained under independent control of Madurai Nayaks.

During the period of Muthu Veerappa Nayak and later during the period of Tirumal Nayak internal strife and intermittent wars ruined the kingdom. As a consequence during the period of Tirumal Nayak, the Kongu region fell into the hands of the Mysore rulers from whom hyder Ali took over the area. However, consequent on the fall of Tippu Sultan of Mysore in 1799, the Kongu region came to be ceded to the East India Company by the Maharaja of Mysore who was restored to power by the East India Company after defeating Tippu Sultan. From then till 1947 when India attained Independence, the region remained under British control who initiated systematic revenue administration in the area.

To begin with, Coimbatore was in two parts for purposes of revenue administration. In 1804, the areas were merged into one and brought under one District Collector.During that time, Mr.H.S.GREAME,[I/C] from 20/10/1803 to 20/01/1805 was the Collector. In 1868, the Nilgiris District was bifurcated from the Coimbatore District. At the opening of the present century there were ten taluks in the district viz., Bhavani, Coimbatore, Dharapuram, Erode, Karur, Kollegal, Palladam, Pollachi, Satyamangalam and Udumalaipettai. The name of Satyamangalam taluk was subsequently changed as Gopichettipalaiyam. Avinashi taluk was formed in the year Karur taluk happened to be transferred to Tiruchirappalli district. In 1927, some villages of Bhavani taluk together with a few villages from Salem district were constituted into Mettur Area but very soon i.e. in 1929, this area was transferred to Salem district. Again in the year 1956 considerable area of the district, viz., the whole of Kollegal taluk was transferred to Mysore State as part of the States Re-organisation Scheme. In 1975, Satyamangalam sub-taluk was upgraded as a full fledged taluk. Again in 1979, Perundurai sub-taluk of Erode and Mettuppalaiyam sub-taluk of Avanashi were also upgraded into independent taluks. Thus the total number of taluks in the district came to twelve. This, however, did not last long. In the same year (1979) six taluks were bifurcated from the district to constitute a new district viz., Erode. Under G.O. Ms. No. 1917 Revenue dt. 31-8-79, the following six taluks were bifurcated from the then Coimbatore district to form Erode district. Bhavani, Gopichettipalaiyam, Satyamangalam, Erode, Perundurai and Dharapuram. This bifurcation considerably reduced the size of the district. It has only nine taluks now, viz. Pollachi, Coimbatore(North), Avanashi, Palladam, Udumalpettai, Tirupur,Valparai,Coimbatore(South) and Mettuppalayam. As per G.O.Ms. No. 617, 618 Revenue dt 24.10.2008, the four taluks from Coimbatore District (i.e. Tiruppur, Udumalpet, Palladam and Avinashi(Part) and three taluks from Erode districts (i.e.Dharapuram, Kangeyam and Perundurai (Part) were bifurcated and formed as Tiruppur District.
